Holiday Reality Check

From Liz Smith's column yesterday:

"THE SINGLE best way to cope with familial turmoil is to give up hope that your relatives will suddenly become cornucopias of emotional health. Your family of origin should give you unconditional love, wisdom, and insight. And this should happen right after your hamster publishes its novel."

So writes Martha Beck in O magazine. Let's hold this thought as we plan our get-togethers with those nearest and dearest to whom we are related.

Also of note:

Addendum: I see the weeks ahead as an obstacle course. I will just take things as they come. Try to let life roll off my back, and deal with the stuff that matters. That's something someone very wise always tried to tell me.
