Last Year's Model: How to sell fans on the same old album for the third or fourth time. [NYTMag] The author, himself an Elvis Costello fan, points out the various reissues of Costello's catalog as a primary example of this practice.
On a related note, there is an Elvis Costello Artist's Choice CD available at Starbucks.

This is a topic Mike & I loved to debate.
After the first series of Ryko CD reissues, I had had it with the EC product deluge. Even though I also had the 'important' bootlegs as well, I didn't see the point in yet more (albeit in higher fidelity) redundant releases. Surely there was a fan or two who didn't have the 'important' bootlegs. But I still felt the subsequent releases were examples of crass commercialism and not edifying.
Of course, that was me being insufferable and a fanboy elitist. Mike would diplomatically listen to my rant, buy the latest, and try to convince me that "hey, it's really, really, good."
I still think I'm basically correct... but I always liked Mike's counterpoint.
