DragonCon 2004 Day 1

Anne McCaffrey and Lady Crumpet (Click on image for larger version; not that it's significantly better.)

One of my favorite sci-fi authors, the great Anne McCaffrey. (My image editing skills aren't very good, so I'm sure this could look much better. Didn't help that the picture had to be taken twice because my digital camera is really small and befuddles people (arrgh).) I asked her to sign my copies of The White Dragon and an advance reader's copy of Dragon's Kin (which I'd won in a raffle at last year's con and had already been signed by her son, Todd McCaffrey). Todd gave me a signed bookplate for his solo Pern book, Dragonsblood, which comes out January 2005.

Addendum: Thanks to mrw for his Photoshop tweaking. Bless those who know what they're doing with computer graphics programs.

Though I had thought that the great Ms. McCaffery had decided for various reasons to not bother leaving Ireland... It's good to know that's not the case.

She's 78, broke her arm twice last year, fractured a rib this year, and is currently on blood thinners. During one of her panels she showed us the ugly, ugly bruises she's subject to as a result.

I've been lucky to see her at several DragonCons; I'm always glad when she comes to town, because I don't think she travels much any more. But she always gets a grand reception at this con; there's a whole programming track devoted to her fiction. She's a gracious dame.

You got to meet ANNE MCCAFFREY!?!?! I am SO jealous!

And, as if she needs a name tag on that table. Anyone who doesn't recognize her on sight doesn't need to meet her. :)

She did three signing sessions - but I only went to one, even though I have so many things I could have brought in. I suspect other fans were more devoted and went to each one. I figured I'd let someone else have the chance - hopefully somebody who wouldn't have had it otherwise.

Funny - I totally didn't notice the name tag until I saw the picture.
